I Aid Continued from Page 1A release, those who visit the center will learn how to apply for financial assistance from the government to help offset the cost of rebuilding. Visitors can also receive information about how to prepare for future natural disasters. "Visitors to the Disaster Recovery Centers can learn what their options are for repairing or rebuilding so they don't have to face the same problems when severe winter storms strike again," Ron Sherman, federal coordinating officer for the disaster, said in a prepared statement. "Information provided at these centers is not only useful to those who suffered damages from this winter's storms, but anyone in the area can visit a center. and find out what they can do to avoid future damages from severe storms and flooding." Those who would like to begin the application process for aid may do so by going online or by calling a toll-free number, (800) 621- 3362.

Davis said he believes the damage in Jackson County could have been much worse. Many residents in the affected areas knew what to expect, he said, namely residents along the White River who have over. the years had their homes built up to prevent damage. "A lot of the people in this area know where the river floods and they have taken precautions for that, which is excellent," Davis said. "Some of the homes that have received damage are down in flood plains and is probably going to be damaged with every flood." Davis said the most important thing for residents to remember is to call the Funeral arrangements are pending at WinklepleckWeesner Funeral Home, Brownstown.

FEMA number if any damage was caused at all. "They can't recoup if they don't get their names into the system and sit down and talk to them," he said, adding that residents should remember they could be eligible for assistance even if damage seems minimal. "Just don't take it for granted that aren't (eligible). They need to really sit down and talk with (emergency officials) and give them a little bit of their time to evaluate whether they are eligible or not. Just don't assume that they're not." Disaster victims who apply for aid may also visit the Bedford center for a meeting with recovery specialists.

Those who need to check on the status of an application may do so by calling one of the above phone numbers or using the Web site. Staff members of the U.S. Small Business Administration will also be available at the center to assist victims with -interest loan applications. None of the workers who found the tank Jan. 19 were exposed to the lethal liquid and none of it was released into the environment, said Lt. Col.

Scott Kimmell, commander of the Newport Chemical Depot. "We have plans in place for situations like this," he said in a statement Tuesday. Depot spokeswoman Terry Arthur said the workers had sealed off the area before work began and were aware going in that they may discover residual VX. They left the area when alarms signaled "that there might be VX present," Arthur said. Workers wearing special gear returned later to take samples of the liquid, and testing confirmed.

Saturday that it was VX, she said. The VX, which has a consistency of mineral oil, was later transferred into an approved storage container and moved to concrete bunkers at the depot about 30 miles north of Terre Haute where 1,269 tons of VX are stored. Kimmell said the tank containing the 20 gallons of VX was part of the original manufacturing process. Pub's kitchen collapses into hole I Crack occurs during excavation for underground parking garage INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The kitchen of a downtown bar and grill collapsed into a hole being dug for a new building next door Tuesday, forcing five customers and three employees to run out of the building. None of the eight people were hurt, but the kitchen at the rear of the building was left sagging, its brick wall lying at the bottom of the hole, The Indianapolis Star reported. A minute or so passed between a warning from the construction crew and the kitchen's collapse, witnesses said. The building next to 745 Bar Grill had been demolished to make way for a new condominium and retail project, The Beilouny at Chatham Pointe. A hole being dug for an underground parking garage in the condo project reached to the property line of the bar.

Harry Adams, manager of the project for developer Indy Ventures, said his company hired a contractor that specializes in shoring -up existing buildings close to new construction. Crews were doing that when the building collapsed, Adams said. Adams said he was just beginning to investigate and had not been to the site since the collapse. "We're just thankful no one got hurt," Adams said. Work on the $12 million, 27-unit condo project, was expected to be complete by late fall.

Bar owner Tracy Robertson said developers had assured her "that we would be fine during construction." A crack had developed in a front corner of the building next to the excavation on 1 New Year's Day, but the first hint of major trouble happened only hours before the collapse, she said. "We noticed some cracks this morning in the kitchen," Robertson said. "Through the day, the cracks got larger, and then it happened." Matt Theobald was inside eating pizza when a construction worker rushed in, he said. The worker warned everyone to get out. "A minute later, the kitchen collapsed," said Theobald.

"It sounded like an earthquake. When we got out, the whole back of the building had collapsed." IU renames honors college for Bedford benefactor BLOOMINGTON (AP) Indiana University has renamed its honors college for Edward L. Hutton, a southern Indiana native who has given the university millions of dollars to support studyabroad and scholarship programs. The 85-year-old Hutton planned to be at a campus celebration and reception today, school officials said. "He's been a friend of the college and also of the campus for quite some time," said Karen Hanson, dean of what's now the Hutton Honors College.

Hutton attended IU on a scholarship and studied business. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the school. Later, he served in the Army and worked for the U.S. occupation force in Germany after World War II: The 85-year-old grew up one of nine children of a stone mill worker in Bedford during the Depression. Now Hutton is chairman of the pharmaceutical care company Chemed Corp.

Hutton gave IU $9 million in 2003 to help establish an endowment for international study, and the university matched the amount earned in interest on the endowment. The endowment supports IU's International Experiences Program, which provides students with study-abroad grants of up to $2,000. Hanson said students in the honors college appreciate and know the importance of Hutton's support. "He's somebody from a small town here in Indiana, as many of our students are, and the story of how he took advantage of the opportunities that came his way is inspiring," she said. IU had the ninth-highest number of students among U.S.

universities study overseas last year with almost 1,400 students, said a 2004 report by 'the Institute of International Education. Hutton Honors College accepts about 10 percent of the approximately 6,500 first-year students admitted to IU each year. It provides honors courses, activities, and a residential community.
